Many service workers oppose proposal to end NY’s tip credit
New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo has proposed eliminating the state’s tip credit, which allows businesses to pay workers who earn tips less than minimum wage. The proposal would raise the current minimum wage for tipped workers from $7.50 an hour to the full minimum wage of $10.40 an hour in western New York. Continue reading

Buffalo State forum focuses on school violence
The School of Education at SUNY Buffalo State hosted a community forum March 8 on school violence and mental illness in the wake of the Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School in Parkland, Florida. Wendy Paterson, dean of the School of Education, moderated the forum that included a panel of faculty and staff members to address concerns from the campus community and answer questions. Study links ultra-processed foods to cancer
A study published last month it the BMJ, which was produced by a team of researchers in France, found people who eat more ultra-processed foods have a higher risk of cancer. This is problematic for Americans, because it’s estimated that 70 percent of U.S. diets consist of processed foods. Continue reading
Buffalo State runner competes for NCAA Division III national title
SUNY Buffalo State runner Cody Sikora competed at the NCAA Division III Indoor Track and Field Championships March 9 at Birmingham Southern College in Alabama. Sikora, a sophomore criminal justice major, finished 12th in the 400 meters with a season best time of 48.73 seconds in his first appearance at the national meet. Continue reading
